Back-to-School English Readiness: Is Your Child Ready for Their Grade Level?

August 7, 2026

Here is a question most parents cannot answer honestly: is your child actually reading and writing at their grade level, or do you just hope they are?

It is a hard question because grade level is slippery, especially in HCMC. Your child might be in Grade 4 at an international school, sitting in a Grade 4 seat, and still be reading closer to a Grade 2 level in English. Nobody flags it until the work gets harder and the marks slip. By then you are a term behind.

This guide gives you rough benchmarks by grade band, a quick self-diagnostic you can run at the kitchen table, and an honest answer about when a real assessment is worth it.

First, why "grade level" is confusing in international schools

In a bilingual or international school, two things measure your child, and they do not always agree.

The grade is where they sit by age. The CEFR level (A1 through C2) is where their English actually is. A Grade 5 child can be a strong reader in Vietnamese, Korean or Japanese and still be at CEFR A2 in academic English. Both facts are true at once. You can see how CEFR maps to school English at Cambridge English.

So "is my child at grade level" really means two questions. Are they keeping up with the age-based curriculum, and is their English strong enough to access it. A child can pass the first and quietly fail the second.

Rough reading benchmarks by grade band

Treat these as orientation, not a verdict. Reading fluency norms (measured in correct words per minute, or WCPM, read aloud from a grade-level passage) give a useful rule of thumb by the end of each year. Comprehension and writing matter just as much, and they are harder to eyeball.

Early years and Grade 1 (ages 5 to 7)

By the end of Grade 1, a child should decode simple words by sounding them out, read short familiar texts at roughly 50 to 60 words per minute, and retell a simple story in order. Writing looks like short, mostly correct sentences with spaces and full stops. If your child is still guessing whole words from the picture, the phonics foundation needs attention.

Grades 2 to 3 (ages 7 to 9)

This is the make-or-break band, when reading shifts from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." By end of Grade 2, expect roughly 90 to 110 words per minute; by end of Grade 3, roughly 110 to 130. Your child should read a paragraph and tell you what it meant, not just what the words were. Writing grows into short paragraphs with linked ideas. Many gaps that surface in Grade 5 actually started here.

Grades 4 to 5 (ages 9 to 11)

Reading speed matters less now and comprehension matters more. Expect roughly 120 to 140 words per minute, but the real test is whether your child can pull the main idea from a page, infer what is not stated and use new vocabulary from what they read. Writing should show structure: an opening, ordered points and a close. This is where children who "sound fine" reading aloud get caught out by comprehension questions.

Secondary (ages 11 and up)

Fluency is assumed. The bar is now analysis: reading longer texts for argument and evidence, writing structured essays, and handling the academic English of IGCSE, IB or IELTS. A child can speak fluent, confident English socially and still be underprepared for this written, analytical level. The gap between spoken and academic English is widest here.

A 6-question kitchen-table self-diagnostic

Run this in ten minutes with a grade-level book and a blank page. Answer each honestly.

  1. Does your child read a new page smoothly, or stop and start on words they should know?
  2. Ask them to retell the page. Can they explain what it meant, not just repeat words?
  3. Point to two unfamiliar words. Do they decode them by sound, or guess from the first letter?
  4. Ask them to write four sentences about their day. Are they full, varied and mostly correct?
  5. Read a two-step instruction aloud once. Do they follow it, or need it repeated?
  6. When they hit a hard word or idea, do they push through, or switch to another language or give up?

Two or more answers on the worrying side, at the start of the year, means the gap is real enough to check properly.

When guessing stops being good enough

A self-diagnostic tells you whether to worry. It does not tell you where the gap is. Reading, fluency, comprehension, writing and spelling are five different skills, and a child can be strong in two and weak in three. Generic tutoring that treats them as one lump wastes months.

A proper diagnostic separates them. At Spark, our free assessment measures all five skill areas and places your child on a clear pathway, so you know exactly which level they are at and what closes the gap. Progress then gets checked every six weeks, in small groups capped at six, so nobody drifts. Our framework for choosing English support walks through how to evaluate any center, including whether you need one at all.

Knowing beats hoping. It is also a lot cheaper than a lost year.

FAQ

How do I know if my child is reading at grade level? Check three things: reading fluency (smooth, steady reading of a grade-level passage), comprehension (can they retell what it meant) and writing (full, structured sentences). If reading sounds fine but comprehension or writing lags, your child may be below grade level even though the reading seems okay.

What is a good reading speed by grade? As a rough end-of-year guide: about 50 to 60 words per minute in Grade 1, 90 to 110 in Grade 2, 110 to 130 in Grade 3 and 120 to 140 by Grade 5. Speed is only a starting point. Comprehension and writing matter just as much.

Why is my child in the right grade but behind in English? Grade is set by age. English level is set by skill. In international and bilingual schools a child can sit in the correct grade and still be a CEFR level or two below what the curriculum demands, especially in academic reading and writing rather than conversation.

Does speaking English well mean my child is at grade level? No. Social or conversational English can be fluent while academic English (reading for meaning, structured writing, analysis) is well behind. This gap is common in HCMC and widens at secondary level.

When should I get a formal English assessment? If a quick self-check raises two or more concerns at the start of term, a formal diagnostic is worth it. It identifies which of the five core skills are behind, so support is targeted rather than general. Spark offers a free assessment across all five areas.
